Vanilla Whipped Dirty Chai

If you’re a lover of a dirty chai tea, whether iced or hot, then this is the drink for you. This is the best version of an iced dirty chai that I personally have ever enjoyed (and this is my coffee shop drink of choice), and I’m so excited to share this very simple, very quick whipped chai tea recipe with you.

The whole Dalgona coffee trend that swept the globe earlier this year caught my attention and it’s honestly held it pretty tight ever since. I love them, what can I tell you? I don’t always hop aboard every trend train that crosses my path, but I did fall for the whole whipped coffee thing, and this city chai spin on them is easily – like, hands down – the best of the bunch, to me.

Vanilla Whipped Dirty Chai

What is a Dirty Chai?

I always order an iced dirty chai at my corner coffee shop here in Charleston, and it is nothing more than a chai tea latte that has been “dirtied” up with a shot or two of espresso. So, I get the spicy flavor of Indian masala chai tea that I adore so much, with the added boost of caffeine from the coffee. It’s really a best-of-both-worlds sort of situation for me.

However.

These (very dainty, very small) iced dirty chai teas cost $7 (I know right?!?) so it’s just not a very reasonable or sustainable daily habit. I started making this version myself at home, and each one of these Vanilla Whipped Dirty Chai drinks costs pennies and they taste better! Yes. I think it’s that little bit of vanilla combined with the creamy consistency that you get from using the Dalgona whipped coffee method that makes these so, so good. I truly cannot wait for you guys to give these a shot.

Ha. See what I did there?

Vanilla Whipped Dirty Chai: The Breakdown

Faster than a traditional espresso-based dirty chai and far more affordable than a coffee shop-procured version, this is a FANTASTIC option for those of you who love a dirty chai but who don’t care to spend the big bucks on them all the time (they’re $7 at my corner coffee shop!). You can make many of these luscious, creamy Whipped Chai Tea drinks in your own kitchen in minutes.

And if this isn’t the best dirty chai you’ve ever had – then I’m a monkey’s uncle … Here’s how to do it:

Whipped Dirty Chai – what you’ll need:

3 bags black masala chai tea

2 TBSP instant coffee

2 TBSP granulated sugar

1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or extract)

Milk, for mixing (I typically use about ¾ cup per drink)

You can keep things vegan by using nut milk or oat milk here, if you like. I often reach for a vanilla almond milk, but whole milk is great, or skim milk or … or .. you get the point. Just use what you have or what you like, and fill your glass with as much milk as you see fit to.

Here’s how to make them:

Steep the tea bags in 1 cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. Allow this concentrated chai tea to come to room temperature before using (I throw it in the freezer to speed this up).

In a large mixing bowl, combine the coffee, sugar, and 2 TBSP of the chai concentrate. Using a hand-held mixer, mix on high until smooth, thick and creamy (like buttercream); about 3 to 4 minutes. Mix in the vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract.

To make one drink: fill a glass with ice. Add two to three tablespoons of the chai concentrate and top with the milk of your choice, as much as you like, leaving room for the whipped dirty chai mixture. Top the milky chai with a couple of TBSP to ¼ cup of the whipped dirty chai (again, this is all to taste).

Stir to mix a bit before enjoying.
