Our 20 Most Popular Meal Train Ideas for a Family

Meal Train Ideas for a Family

We’re dishing up lots of fresh, unique meal train ideas for a family today. I’m cooking dinner for a friend today who recently had surgery and needs so much help – in all the ways. Given that she is the mother of five (five!) sweet boys, I know that healthy, nourishing, and FILLING meals are a top priority for her family right now, while she’s healing and recovering. So, I’m whipping up my favorite Double Chicken Pot Pie Casserole with Puff Pastry for her, a recipe you’ll find (a version of) below and in my forthcoming cookbook, Homemade-ish. I wanted to create a list here for you, of some other meals I’ve got up my sleeve for occasions just like this.

If you’re looking for solid and satisfying recipes to lean on when you’ve signed up for a meal train – I’ve got you covered here on MKL. When it comes to this specific situation, there are a few things I look for to ensure I’m providing my friends (the recipients of said meal train) with the most deliciously helpful items I can. So here’s what I look for …

Meal Train Ideas for a Family

Things to keep in mind when planning meal train ideas for a family:

  1. Think one-pot wonders. For transporting reasons alone, this is always something important to consider when preparing meals for groups of people. Whether you’re cooking for two or twenty (okay, that would be a lot), thinking about meals that contain the full nutritional spectrum all in one easy package is always my first priority. It makes it easy and more manageable for everyone involved. I’d rather drop of a single casserole (with protein, starch, and veggies all in one dish) than say, 10 different containers of this and that for tacos. Easy, low-maintenance dishes are the name of the meal train game, always.
  2. When considering various meal train ideas for a family – if there is any re-heating or minimal cooking that needs to happen before the lucky recipients of your cooking can enjoy it, it’s nice to include that in writing when you deliver the goods. Or, simply send a thoughtful text message with any pertinent need-to-know’s included. For example, I’ve taken a great gnocchi soup to friends before and the gnocchi just had to be cooked right before eating. Otherwise, the little pillowy potato dumplings would have sucked up all the liquid from the dish, essentially ruining things before they ever got to begin.
  3. When delivering the food for your meal train ideas for a family opt for disposable (or gift-able) containers is always a nice idea as well, if you can. This prevents the recipients from having to wash or deal with any dishes after they’ve enjoyed the food. And it keeps them from feeling like they need to bring you back your stuff after all is said and done. This isn’t a huge deal – just a small-but-nice detail that can really streamline the process for everyone involved.

There’s some juicy, fresh citrus running through the whole thing, which lifts the stew to a beautiful, bright new place.
